Our Work with Refugees
According to the United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees from 1951, a refugee is a person who, "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country".
Additionally, there is another set of people we could consider as "refugees" -- those people who have become displaced or require refuge because of natural disaster. Refugees who are displaced but remain within their own country are known as "Internally Displaced People" (IDP).
CoAid uses the term "refugee" broadly to refer to anyone who has had cause to flee their home or country to seek refuge elsewhere because of conflict or natural disaster.
CoAid is active in supporting refugee communities around the world.
Here are some of the types of work we do:
- Organize food drives to support refugee families in USA.
- Recruit volunteers to support and mentor refugee families.
- Supply shoes and school supplies to children of refugee families.
- Provides practicla and logistical support to refugees as they seek to reestablish themselves within their own communities or in another country.
