Haiti Update #1
Haiti Update #1
Just spoke with Jack Minton, President of Hope Force International (our partner in Haiti).
Access to Haiti is being hampered by lack of available flights. No jet fuel at the airport. Personnel may have to fly to the Dominican Republic and travel overland, but this is not without its problems either. Private jets may be one option to get into the country, but each seat costs $2,200 each, a price we may have to pay in order to get key medical personnel in to start treating the injured, but this saps funds -- it's a trade-off.
Reports from the field are still sketchy -- some text messages not being replied to -- so phone infrastructure may be a problem. The priorities in terms of infrastructure are to restore power and water, and open the ports so heavy lifting gear and machinery can get in.
Lack of food and potable water in Port-au-Prince is a problem not just for Haitians, but also for aid workers arriving in country. Hope Force team members may have to take own freeze-dried food, but water remains an issue.
Fundraising is slow, not sure why this is... donor fatigue? Exploring some ideas to get more funds.
Please continue to pray for all involved. The next few days are critical as more people are expected to die unless they get aid very soon!
Will keep you updated.
Please make a donation if you can -- every gift helps!

President, CoAid
