It Happened 30 Days Ago!

30 days ago a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the country of Haiti. An esimated 230,000 people died. 1.5 million people have been directly affected by the disaster.

I recently returned from a short visit to Haiti where I saw the devastation at first hand and met many survivors who told me their stories of survival and loss.

Steve Neill, President of CoAid visited Haiti in January to see for himself the destruction left by the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake and do an initial needs assessment.

See some of the pictures Steve took of this needs assessment visit.

Haiti Assessment Trip #7

Woke at 5.15am to get ready to leave for airport at 6am. Quick shower, got packed and had breakfast. Got taxi to airport. Long line to AA desk. Paid $330 for ticket – got upgraded to business class at gate! Plane had a minor/insignificant power loss and a passenger wanted off the plane… flight got delayed an hour while they searched for his bag!

Arrived Denver about 9pm -- a long day, but so good to see the family and have big hugs!

Lot's of thinking, planning and preparations for next steps to help in Haiti.

Haiti Assessment Trip #6

Woke at 4.45am for 5am ride to UN base. Pastor G awoke to see me go. Prayed with pastor. He knelt on both knees and prayed with great humility. Arrived at UN base at 5.30am – no one awake… so much for leaving at 6am!

Finally set off at about 9am. Long bus drive back to SD. Took a different route back than the one we came. Jeff C at Vision Airlines sent text to say there is a charter flight from Port-au-Prince at 1.30am Tuesday AM… wish I knew that earlier, could have spent 1 more day in Haiti.

Haiti Assessment Trip #5

Church AM. Service in French Creole. Met 2 American structural engineers who reported that many of the collapsed buildings could have been prevented if Haitian builders used different techniques (wiring rebar with longer struts, 135 degree ties etc). Seems like Haiti has enough of the right building supplies, just need better training/technique etc.
