9/11 Remembered

10 years ago today the world was left dumbfounded as one of the worst tragedies unfolded before our eyes. The events of 9/11 left a scar that has changed the course of a nation and countless people around the world are still experiencing its effects today.

Within 15 days of the January 2010 earthquake that struck Haiti, killing 2% of its population, Americans donated an estimated $528 million help meet the relief efforts.

This massive outpouring of government, corporate and private donations highlight the willingness of our nation to respond generously to the needs of others in a crisis such as this.

I had visited the refugee camp many times before, but this time things were very different. The sight was one of absolute ruin. Victims sifted through the charred remains of their simple homes looking for anything salvageable but seemed to find little. A few people had started the process of rebuilding by gathering bamboo poles and sheets of corrugated roofing.

In 2010 I traveled twice to Haiti to oversee the work of CoAid, the relief and development agency I help lead. During my last trip in August, I was dismayed to see so many people still living on the streets without adequate shelter or clean water. I asked myself, “Where is all the donor money going?”

2nd Annual Food Drive

CoAid is organizing a city-wide food drive in Denver, CO that will run during the entire month of November to benefit refugees in our community.

This year there will be close to 3,000 refugees arriving in Colorado from various countries. CoAid is partnering with Lutheran Family Services, a resettlement agency in Denver.
